ONE FOR ALL, ALL FOR ONE

ONE FOR ALL, ALL FOR ONE

Thinking about what had happened at work yesterday, she fell asleep. A thousand questions swirled around in her mind, keeping her awake all night. She woke up before sunrise. Aylin had made a serious mistake at work. She was anxious and afraid, unsure of what her boss and coworkers would say.

Her boss used to react different from the people she had seen around her so far, but what would he say in her case was unknown... As being anxious, something completely opposite to her worries happened.

It had only been three months since she started the job. Most of the time, she saw her boss meeting people's needs. She was usually thinking, “How can he be so thoughtful? Is it just a personal trait?” or what else? After what happened yesterday, she realized his attitudes’ reasons.

Even though there were different departments at work, it seemed like everything was managed by one person. When accomplising tasks no one felt left out. She was learning what it meant to be “us” rather than “me.”

Once he said, “We are a team. One person's mistake is everyone's mistake. One person's success is everyone's success.” The goal was not to point out someone's mistake to their face, but to empower that person. This both would increase that person's motivation and led them to take ownership of the work.

The same was done for her

Knowing that someone is on your side made you feel secure. It then give rise to the feeling of “what can I do for them?”

That's how it was for Aylin. How did her boss used to manage to do it? He didn't compromise himself in the process. He made others happy and felt happy himself as well. So how could he maintain this balance, and what was his basis for doing so? How could he stay motivated to ensure its continuity?

While thinking about this, she remembered her beloved grandmother. She was someone who was never alone and was loved by all her neighbors. People used to say, 'Our Aunt Sevim is one of a kind. Where her grandchildren couldn’t be, the neighbors were. How could someone make herself so loved?

ONE FOR ALL, ALL FOR ONE

Her grandmother's voice rang in her ears:

“If you lift a stone from someone else's life, you lift a stone from your own life.”

That was her philosophy of life too...

Thinking about it, she realized her boss was like her grandmother.

Nowadays, most people are too lazy to lift the stone in front of them, so they jump over and move on.

Yesterday, the boss said, “Guys, we won't lose much by telling the customer that instead of selling them a defective product we will delay on the delivery date.” He had worked so hard all these years to avoid being one of those companies in the job market that try to sell defective products to someone as if they were flawless.

ONE FOR ALL, ALL FOR ONE

He started his speech by asking a bunch of questions...

  • When the customer understood the mistake that was made, would they want to shop from them again or recommend them to someone else?
  • It's easy to exclude the coworker from the team who made the mistake. Isn't nice to teach them how to do the right?
  • Wouldn't that be profitable for both sides?

“As a team, we must correct our mistakes. By being more understanding of the mistakes made by apprentices and acting as a supportive force, we can find a way to solve the problem without blaming individuals or pinning the fault on someone else.”

Yet today's trend

In every relationship, in neighborly relations, in business partnerships, among employees, everything is experienced within immediate self-interest. Everyone highlights others' mistakes while being reluctant to look at their own.

Is winning the only thing a person should think about, or should they also think about helping others win?

When studying for exams, when getting a job, when hiring , when getting married, when growing each other...

As she thought about these, she remembered her boss discourse...

He began by giving examples from nature:

Think of nature he said with all its perfect beauty. Why is it so beautiful, and why do people want to keep looking at it? Everything is intertwined harmoniously, isn’t it?

Do you think every the cherry trees possibly blame each other for blooming late? Or blame the rain falling early? Or blame the snow staying on the ground for a long time?

If their interactions weren't based on mutual benefit, would we be able to witness such beauty?

"Of course, people want to benefit. What is the way to do so? By benefiting the other person first. What elevates a person is being able to act with the other person's benefit in mind.

Friends, what beautifies relationships in life is looking out for each other's interests." he said.

The more she thought about it, the more grateful she felt; she had even thought for a moment that she would be fired because of her mistake. But now Aylin would devote herself even more to her job and work as hard as she could to avoid repeating the mistake.

She started the day with the sentence that had stayed in her mind since childhood.

One for all, all for one!!
